A National Tragedy

I know that there are some REAL National Tragedies out there-like the 49ers losing the Superbowl.  However, today I am lamenting the loss of a long time family favorite...Hostess Powdered Donuts.

Growing up I remember before heading out for a long trip to Utah or something my mom would get Hostess Donuts for Breakfast.  The car would be packed and ready to go, the house cleaned.  (Somehow this has never happened to my current family now, it takes a full 24 hours to get out the door I swear.) Anyway, we would just wake up with excitement about the trip and eat our Hostess Donuts with milk and off we went!  It was a great treat.  *Maybe this is just the way I remember it.  Maybe if I start getting powdered donuts before long trips my kids won't remember me yelling last minute instructions, running around like a maniac, sweating, chasing the dog, and everyone in a bad mood by the time we pull out.

In High School,  I would buy a six pack package of either the Hostess Powdered Donuts or the Hostess Chocolate Covered Donuts almost everyday to supplement my lunch.  Hey, High School Metabolism...can you please come back?  These days I still buy them on Special Occasions and we serve them up really fancy like this....

I miss seeing them on the end aisles at the grocery store.  They just make me happy.   Sophie is pretty happy about this shopping trip we took last week. By the end of a trip she is always squished in the seat, surrounded by food.

I know, I know.  There are all kinds of "replacements" out there right now.  I found these two at a local gas station.  I will admit, the Walmart ones are pretty close.  But NOTHING will replace Hostess.  Hostesss!  Come back ! We need you!

I heard they have finally agreed to a buy out from another company and Hostess should be returning to shelves by back-to-school season this year.  Let's cross our fingers!

In the meantime I am trying to focus on healthier alternatives.  Do you order from Bountiful Baskets  where you live?  They have it in more states than you would believe. You place your order online early in the week, and then on Saturday you go to a local location and pick up this-

We love it!  We also order the bread and a few other things from time to time.  I used to order all the time and got out of the habit.  I don't know why!  It is so delicious and my kids love it.

Last time I went it forced me to organize the fridge to fit it all in...

If it makes you clean and organize your fridge, it just might be worth it on that merit alone.

Today my fridge doesn't look like this anymore.  It is a lot emptier.  I just wish I had a nice powdered donut to make me feel better about it.
